Covering Yourself Financially For The Difficult Times In Life

Hard times are something that we all need to keep our eyes open for. Life can be rosy one minute, and we can feel financially secure, and then the next, the worst can happen.

Whether it is a broken down car that needs expensive repair work, losing your job, needing to relocate, or the death of a family member, unexpected expenses can cause stress and worry.

If we are not financially prepared for the worst, then this could send us into debt.

Car repair bills can really mount up. Gravestones can be expensive, and funeral costs can really mount up.

The last thing that you want to do when dealing with an unexpected financial problem is to have to take out credit. If you can’t afford it now, you’ll end up paying considerably more for it when you pay using a credit card.

Having money kept aside in savings will mean that you will be in a better position to handle yourself financially during these difficult times in life.

But, when money flows through your life like water, how to you save?

Set Up A Savings Account

You need somewhere secure to store your money. Don’t leave it in your main account and don’t keep it at home. It will be far too easy to spend.

Set yourself up a high-interest savings account. Having somewhere to put your money will mean it is less likely that you will try and spend it.

Cut Back On Your Spending

Seems obvious. But it needs to be said. You need to limit your spending. If you are eating out lots, buying takeouts, or not taking a homemade lunch with you into work, then you are overspending.

If you continually buy products such as clothes or gadgets, then you will never be able to save.

Go through your recent spending, and up all of the non-essential purchases. You might be surprised about how much you could potentially cut out.

Budget

Set yourself a budget in the following areas:

  • Food shopping
  • Travel
  • Personal spending

Work out what you need to spend in these areas. Once you know this, you can create a very specific budget that you should do your best to stick to.

Cancel Unused Subscriptions

If you have any streaming services, subscriptions, or memberships that you are not making good use out of, cancel them.

If something is not providing you good value for money, then you can put that money to better use elsewhere.

Switch Providers

Your energy supplier and your broadband provider may be overcharging you.

If you have been a long-time customer of theirs, you will have no doubt seen your payments rise. They might have hooked you in on a great introductory offer, but now that deal might have gone.

Shop around and make a switch to a cheaper supplier. Make use of introductory offers.  Remember though that you will need to keep switching supplier’s as soon as the best offers end.
