Exploring The World By Water

71% of the Earth’s surface is covered in water. By venturing off land, you can unlock all kinds of new adventures. Here are just several ways to explore the world by water.

Book a cruise

Cruise ships are practically giant floating resorts that contain everything from bars to gyms to indoor ice rinks. They tend to stop at multiple ports, allowing you to potentially explore multiple countries while only ever having to unpack your bags once. There are ocean cruises and there are river cruises (the Danube and Yangtze are two popular rivers for cruises). Some of the biggest cruise liners are capable of accommodating over 5000 guests.

This mode of travel is perfect for those that like their luxury while on holiday. There are cruises out there catered to all demographics including cruises for families, cruises for over 50s and even party cruises for younger travellers. With just a little bit of research, therefore, you’ll soon be able to find the best cruises in the Caribbean or wherever it is you want to sail that suits your needs and preferences exactly.

Go on a sailing trip

Sailing offers a more intimate experience than a cruise ship – you don’t have to share the boat with hundreds of other holidaymakers. There are luxury yachts that you can charter and there are more basic boats for those that don’t mind travelling a little rough.

You’ll find plenty of sailing holidays in Norway. Mediterranean sailing holidays are also popular. Many companies allow you to hire a crew and may be able to recommend you the best itinerary. Larger boats with more mod cons tend to be more expensive to charter.

Take a kayak adventure

For a more rugged form of travel, you could consider going on a kayak adventure. There are multi-day kayak tours in which you can follow a guide with the option of wild camping along the way. Such tours are great for exploring the rivers of the Scottish Highlands or the lakes of Canada. You could even get to explore places that are inaccessible via any other form of travel.

These trips aren’t for everyone – they’re pretty much the equivalent of a trek. It’s ideal for those that love physically active holidays and crave that sense of adventure.

Learn to dive

Learning to dive could allow you to explore the world under the surface of the water. This could be a chance to get up close to coral reefs and explore shipwrecks.

First, you’ll need to obtain your PADI license – this qualification is recognised around the world and allow you to legally go scuba diving on your own. Many popular diving destinations around the world have diving schools where you can learn. Of course, once you’ve got your license, you don’t have to dive alone – there are plenty of diving tours in which you can explore popular underwater sights with the help of a guide.

Snorkelling is always an option for those that don’t want to learn to dive. Submarine trips and glass-bottomed boats could be another option worth looking into.
