Many people get a glimpse into this lifestyle in the form of looking after their parents or family members during their senior years. Caring for relatives who are experiencing physical and health limitations can come with its own set of challenges. Regardless of whether or not they are open to making adjustments to their life and home, sometimes these changes need to be made.
So what can you do to help your loved ease into changes that help assist them in their day to day living?
Furniture
For those with mobility problems, having furniture that works for them can be life-changing. From adjustable beds and tables to age care chairs and mobility aids for when out and about, it is the little things that can make a difference. Make sure they take control of the purchase as much as possible, so they know exactly what they are getting and what to expect when it arrives.
Call them regularly
Something that you will hear regularly from elderly parents is that all they want is to hear from their families. They may not necessarily need assistance with anything. But the small act of checking in regularly can help them to feel more involved and reduce the loneliness that set in during the golden years.
Loneliness is as much of a killer as physical ailments and going days or weeks without hearing from anyone can cause depression and cause people to retreat inside themselves and become more reclusive.
Security.
It is a well-known fact that scammers and thieves target those they perceive to be more vulnerable and less likely to put up a fight. Installing extra security options for your parents or loved ones can set both your mind and theirs at ease.
You can video doorbells so they can see who is knocking on the door without opening the door, house alarms, and CCTV. For those scam phone calls and phishing emails, set up apps that can block unwanted phone calls and direct such emails to spam to reduce the risk of them falling victim to such things.
Practical tips such as only withdrawing large sums of money from cashpoints inside banks and putting their money away before leaving the till points when shopping. Some find it handy to have bells attached to wallets or purses to alert them of people trying to pickpocket their belongings.
Encourage them to be active
Depending on their health, it may be a good idea to help encourage your relatives to be more active or social. Using local community centers, you may be able to find the right setting for them to get out and stay active. Volunteering in various charitable settings can help give them a purpose and get out of the house as can social groups organized specifically for this purpose around the local community.
