Is Your Home Smelly? Here’s Why

Do you live in a smelly home? If so, you’re not alone. It turns out that around 50 percent of dwellings have a pungent smell of one sort or another.

In this post, we take a look at why your home is smelly and what, if anything, you can do about it.

You Don’t Keep Your Herbs And Spices In Sealed Jars

Ideally, you should be keeping your herbs and spices in sealed jars. The reason for this is simple: things like cumin, dried mint and garlic powder give off strong smells. Eventually, these mix with the rest of the scent particles in your home, creating a pungent odour that doesn’t quite smell right.

We suggest keeping herbs and spices in sealed glass jars and only opening them when you need them for cooking. If you keep them in unsealed packets or containers, the smell will leak out.

There’s Fat Residue In Your Kitchen

When you cook with oils and fats, parts of them turn into vapour and then travel through the air. When they condense, they turn back into oil which then turns rancid over time, creating a nasty smell.

There are two main ways to deal with this problem. First, make sure that the extractor fan in your kitchen is working. Extractors help to remove oil vapors before they have time to settle.

Second, wipe up the grime on top of your kitchen cabinets. This is the most likely location for residue to settle.

Third, if you really can’t abide oil deposits in your kitchen, fry in either wine or stock. Both options are good alternatives to conventional oil.

Your Sofas Are Emitting Bad Smells

When your sofas are new, they’re perfectly clean. Unfortunately, over time, that can change, according to experts such as All Gleaming Clean. Odor particles get into the fabric and start producing some nasty smells.

If your sofas are emitting smells (which they probably are if you haven’t cleaned them in a while), then you’ll need to get them cleaned. To do this, you’ll need all of the proper equipment, including a wet vacuum. Alternatively, you can hire professionals to do it for you in a fraction of the time. You’ll be amazed at just how much dirt you can eliminate.

You’ve Got Mold In The Bathroom

Mold in the bathroom is a major contributor to the smell in your home. You’ll know you have it: when you walk into the room it smells musty and dank.

Getting rid of mold requires a couple of strategies. First, you’ll need to clean your bathroom. Doing this gets rid of the mold spores that are already there. Target any blackened areas of grout.

Second, you’ll need to make sure that your extractor fan is working. This removes moisture from the atmosphere after a bath or shower. It is essential for preventing mold from getting a foothold.

If you’re still having trouble with moisture, add a bowl of silica salts to the window sill. This will soak up any remaining moisture in the air, keeping the bathroom dry. Just make sure that you replace it regularly.
