How to Encourage Your Child to Spend More Time Outdoors

As a mom, it’s important for you that your kids spend time outdoors. Not only does it get them moving and help them stay healthy, but it also helps them connect with nature. Here are some tips on how to encourage your child to spend more time outdoors.

1) Get them involved in outdoor activities

If your kids see you enjoying the outdoors, they’ll be more likely to want to join in. So take them on hikes, bike rides, or send them on more outdoor adventure school trips. Encourage your child’s natural sense of curiosity by pointing out things along the way – birds, squirrels, flowers, and so on.

Help them understand that there’s a whole world to explore beyond their backyard. If you can make it fun, they’ll be more likely to want to do it again. Try playing games like “I Spy” or hide-and-seek while you’re out and about.

2) Make sure they have the right gear

If your child is going to be spending time outdoors, they need the proper clothing and equipment. Depending on the activity, they might need sunscreen, hats, insect repellents, comfortable shoes, and so on.

If you don’t have the gear yourself, borrow it from a friend or neighbor. You can also check out thrift stores or garage sales – you might be able to find some great deals. Once your child has the appropriate gear, they’ll be more likely to want to use it. And when they’re using it, they’ll be more likely to enjoy themselves and want to spend more time outdoors.

3) Schedule some outdoor time into your day

If you want your child to spend more time outdoors, make it a priority. Put it on the family calendar or schedule it into your day just like any other activity. And don’t forget to include yourself! Kids are more likely to follow your lead if they see that you’re enjoying the outdoors as well. Spending time outdoors is suitable for everyone – so get out there and enjoy the fresh air!

When it comes to getting kids outside, one size does not fit all – what works for one might not work for another. The key is to experiment until you find something that gets them excited about spending time in nature.

4) Take advantage of technology

Nowadays, there are all sorts of apps and websites that can help get your kids interested in the outdoors. For example, there are apps that can help you identify animals, birds, and plants. There are also websites where kids can track their outdoor adventures or earn badges for completing certain challenges.

If you have a reluctant child, start with baby steps. For example, maybe they’re not ready to hike five miles just yet. But if you can get them excited about spending an hour outside each day, that’s a great start!

By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to getting your kids excited about spending time outdoors. So get out there and enjoy the fresh air! Your kids will thank you for it later.
