6 Things to Do If You Can’t Find the Right Home for You

House hunting is kind of like using dating apps, there are no end of options available to you, but once you’ve weeded out the “no ways: ad the “not quite right’s” there’s very little left to choose from and you can’t face settling for less than you desire so you end up not being able to choose anything at all.

If this sounds all-too-familiar to you, and it’s basically how your house hunting journey has gone down so far, you might be wondering what you can do now that you can’t find the right house for you. Well, here are some things that may help:

1. Revisit Your Must-Haves vs. Nice-to-Haves

We all start with a fantasy list: south-facing garden, big kitchen, walk-in wardrobe, home office, unicorn-stable… you know, the essentials. But sometimes  it helps to refine that list. What do you truly need? What can you compromise on? And which requirements are actually just “Pinterest told me so”? Adjusting your expectations (even slightly) can open up choices you didn’t realise you had.

2. Explore Areas You’ve Never Considered

It could be the case that your dream home is not to be found in the location you thought it would be, but somewhere else entirely. Maybe the next neighbourhood over has greener streets, nicer cafés, or better prices. Or perhaps you’ve been ignoring entire postcodes out of habit. So, take a wander, try a coffee there, check commute times. Give other areas a fair chance. You might be pleasantly surprised.

3. Look Beyond Surface Flaws

A house with terrible décor isn’t a lost cause; it’s an opportunity. Bad carpet? Replace it. Ugly paint? Gone by next weekend. A kitchen straight out of 1978? A project waiting to happen. If the layout and bones of the house are good, everything else is just cosmetic, and cosmetic can very much be changed.

4. Consider Renovation Projects

If pristine, move-in-ready homes are scarce, a fixer-upper might actually be the answer. Yes, it takes effort, patience, and a strong stomach for dust, but the result can be a home that feels truly yours. And you can usually get more space or a better location for the same budget.

5. Think About Building Instead

When all else fails, go full hero mode and create your dream home from scratch. Custom builds aren’t just for millionaires on TV, they are a genuinely doable for normal humans, especially if you already have a plot of land in mind. With the right home builders, you can design exactly what you want: the layout, the finishes, the storage (because no one ever says, “I wish I had less storage”). It’s a bigger process, but if you’re picky, and let’s be honest, you are, it’s worth considering.

6. Take a Short Break From Searching

House hunting fatigue is real. After the 20th disappointing viewing, everything feels terrible. Take a breather. Stop looking for a week or two, clear your head, and come back fresh. You’ll make better decisions when you’re not mentally screaming.

Be patient, and your dream home will reveal itself to you.
