Having a pet in the family might seem like a lot of hard work and a big commitment, but did you know that pets can provide real benefits to you and your family’s day-to-day life? Of course, there’s the companionship they provide but as well as that spending time with a dog or cat can have a positive affect your mood, health, and well-being too. As our lifestyles become more and more hectic in this modern world, sometimes you just need to disconnect, and pets are a great way to do that, they are amazing at helping you de-stress and fantastic for helping you to unwind. Taking your dog out for a walk or playing with your cat, means that you are subconsciously disconnecting from the world around you and here are a few more reasons why pets are so good for your health:
It Gets You Outdoors
If you have trouble getting your kids to go outside and play or feel yourself that you don’t spend enough time outdoors, then having a dog is the perfect excuse. Research from the University of Sydney in Australia found that teens who were more active outdoors scored higher in regards to social functioning, whereas teens who spent more time being sedentary indoors more often reported feeling lonely and shy. Also, when you’re inside, the air you’re breathing in is stale, it has been “used” and doesn’t contain as much oxygen as the fresh air from the outside. Getting out in the fresh means that you will get higher levels of oxygen which can help improve concentration and has been shown to improve blood pressure and heart rate, promote a stronger immune system, encourage higher serotonin levels, which improves mood, and even aids in digestion. Just make sure that as it gets colder, you look at decent dog coats to keep your furry friend nice and warm.
It Keeps You Active
Having a dog will keep you active, they are very useful for improving your cardiovascular health, and according to studies, dog owners who regularly walk their dogs are less likely to be obese than those who don’t own or walk a dog. It has also been found that elderly people who walk their dogs regularly, walk faster than their counterparts who don’t own a dog and that they’re even more mobile at home.
Pets Relieve Stress
Spending time with your pet can have an amazing calming effect on you and can help decrease your cortisol levels which is the hormone that our bodies release when you experience stress.
Less risk of allergies
Having a pet in your household while growing up may have helped you develop an immunity to allergens. While people think this would be the opposite and that it would give you allergies, this isn’t right.
There’s so much joy to have by owning a pet, they benefit us in so many ways and bring us lots of laughs and lots of fun. They become part of the family, and you’ll wonder what you did before they came along, so it’s only fair to look after them and give them the lives they deserve. There is now so much information out there on different breeds of animals and how to look after them, so make sure you do your research and get the right pet for your family.
