We all want to have a home that looks good, keeps us entertained, and all-around provides a comfortable and relaxing retreat from the world. But as with most things in life, what we want and what we get are often two different things. If we’re going to have a home that we enjoy, then we need to consciously work towards it. A good place to start is to focus on those things that will, if left unchecked, compromise the enjoyment of your home. Below, we take a look at nine of the big things that’ll do just that.
Poor Curb Appeal
When you return home, you want to have positive feelings from the first moment that you see your home. But if the outdoor area of your property isn’t as well-designed as it could be, then you’ll run into issues. The interior of your home is really what counts, but there’s no doubt that the outdoor spot also plays a role. If you take steps to make the space more presentable, then you’ll have an improved view of your home. Things such as adding plants, adding a gate, such as those high-quality electric gates in the UK, and upgrading your doors will all help.
Cluttered Entranceways
You’ll also want to take a look at your entranceway. What are you greeted by, when you first walk through the door? If it’s a calm and well-organised space, then you’ll enjoy your home from the moment you arrive. If, on the other hand, it’s dark, cluttered, and generally uninspiring, then you’ll find that it’s harder to enjoy. Remember what they say: you should start as you mean to go on. Work on making your entranceway pleasant and agreeable by adding flowers, making sure it’s spacious, bright, and so on.
Lack of Space
You can handle existing with limited space for a little while, but it’s not something that you want to live with. It has a corrosive effect on our well-being. We’re just forever surrounded by material items; you can barely hear yourself think. Now, the issue of space isn’t always easily rectified. You can’t exactly change the size of a room, can you? However, you make a space feel bigger than it really is. For example, you can keep things minimalist. Declutter your home, and you’ll find that it’s much roomier. For the things that you do need to keep, you can make the most of clever storage options. Essentially, for all the things on display, you should ask yourself if it really needs to be there. If the answer is yes, then no problem, but if it’s a no, then get rid of it.
Comfort Issues
Our homes are supposed to be comfortable and relaxing. And while there are many different aspects that’ll influence these factors, there’s one thing that’ll have a bigger impact than any other: the heating issue. In some areas of the world, it’ll be about how to keep your home cool during the summer, but in the UK, we know that’s not an issue. Having well-heated homes is one of those things we can take for granted, yet we notice it instantly when we’re in a cold home. To ensure that your home is continually able to battle the chill, you’ll want to have your boiler regularly serviced and to periodically check that there are no leaky spots (such as old windows/doors) where heat could escape.
Unwelcome Guests
You want your home to be a hub of life; it should be energetic, full of familial love, and warmth. But it is important that all those living in your home are welcome to do so. This isn’t always the case, such as when you have pest issues. Aside from living there rent-free, they will also severely compromise how much you’re able to enjoy your property. It’s just hard to relax, knowing that there could be a creepy-crawly somewhere in the vicinity. If you suspect that you have an issue, then look at calling a pest control company. They’ll help to ensure that the only creatures at your property are the ones you want to be there.
External Light and Noise
Your home should function as a retreat from the outside world. However, this isn’t always the case, such as when your home suffers from the issue of letting too much external noise and light into the property. It’s hard to really sink into the pleasures of a winter’s movie night when you have to contend with the noise from the street. A streetlamp that is inconveniently pointed into your property will cause similar problems. Fortunately, there are things you can do that’ll keep both of these issues to a minimum. You can get blackout curtains for the light issue, and soundproof your property for the noise complaints.
Outdated Tech
The world is always moving technologically forward, but it seems that things have jumped forward significantly in recent years. As such, when you walk into some people’s homes, it’s like stepping into the future (depending on how out of date you are with your tech). You might not always want to drop a month’s wages on tech updates, but it is recommended from time to time. You’ll find that you like being at home much more if you have a sophisticated television, good sound system, modern fridge, and so on.
Out of Season
Of all the pieces of advice for living well, the idea of moving with the seasons seems to be one of the best. You feel different in winter than you do in summer, so you should act like it. As such, it’s recommended that you make subtle changes so that you live the season well. In the summer, it’s about having a garden that’ll allow you to enjoy the warm weather months to the max. In the winter, it’s about having those cosy corners and soft fabrics that allow you to sink into all that’s great about winter. You’ll find that you like your home much more when it is in tune with the climate.
