But, while our children will always need clothes, there are some great ways that we can save money, while still keeping our kids in clean, warm and well-fitting clothes. Here’s a look at some tips to help you.
Think Ahead
Often the best way to save money on children’s clothing (and your own, come to think of it) is to shop out of season. Young kids grow quickly, so there’s always a risk that a coat that you buy on sale in the summer months, or in the end of season winter sales the year before, won’t fit. But, getting a size bigger, or even a few sizes bigger ready for a future winter gives you a good chance. Try to only buy basics for now, with everything else, shop ahead of time, so that you’ve always got something new to pull out of the wardrobe when they need it.
Invest in Quality Pieces
It can be tempting to buy kids clothes as cheaply as possible. But, this can create a false economy. Buying cheap clothes often means that they don’t last, lose color and shape, and become damaged quickly. You can end up buying much more than you need to.
Certainly, buy some of the basics as cheaply as you can. But, for other kids clothing sets, spending a little more on higher-quality materials can be a good idea. Spending more means that they will last for longer, and you could even make some money back by selling them on, or keeping them for a future baby when they no longer fit.
Browse Second-Hand
Your children aren’t the only ones that grow quickly. Most of them do. This means that you can get some high quality, hardly worn, secondhand pieces from nearly new stores and online.
Don’t Follow Fashions
Kids clothes have fashions, just like grown-up outfits. But, trying to stick to what is in fashion can mean that you are always buying new. Try to avoid trends, sticking to simple prints, patterns, and block colours that will always look fantastic.
Enjoy Clothes Swaps and Hand Me Downs
Like shopping secondhand, hand me downs are a great money-saving option. Keep your own children old clothes if you are planning more, and arrange to swap pieces with friends and family members.
Look After Them
What about making clothes that you buy last longer? You can’t stop kids rolling around in the mud or spilling food, but you can wash clothes in a gentle detergent according to the manufacturer’s instructions to give them the best shop at lasting longer.
