When you first move into your new home, you might have a spare bedroom. Most houses are at least two bedrooms, so you will probably get a bonus room if it’s just you and maybe a partner. But if you have no plans for children or a roommate, what should you do with it? I turned mine into an office, but there are many things you could do with yours. There are plenty of ways to use a spare room, whether it’s as a guest bedroom, a hobby room, a home cinema, or anything else that you can think of.
Make a Plan
Before you can do anything else, you need to know what you want to do with your extra room. You might have a very clear idea of what to do with it. Or perhaps you’re unsure of what to do with it, and you know that you need to think of something. You can turn it into anything that you like as long as it’s big enough for what you want to do. Of course, some ideas will take more work and cost more money. Converting it into an additional bathroom will require new plumbing, for example.
Clear Out the Clutter
If your spare room is full of clutter, you need to do something else with it. When you first move in, you can end up putting unpacked boxes in the extra bedroom, intending to deal with them later. Maybe you can find somewhere else to put it all or you just haven’t got around to it. Redecorate
Once your room is cleared out, you might want to decorate before adding any furniture or anything else. If you haven’t really been using it, it’s likely that it doesn’t look particularly stylish. You have a chance to repaint or perhaps put new flooring in before you do anything else. You might also need to consider other updates, whether it’s installing new electrical outlets or putting in a skylight to let more natural light in. If you want to go for the rustic look, you can install some lovely cast iron radiators. These will not only add style, but they will warm the room up too. While the room is empty, take the opportunity to make improvements.
Create a Flexible Space
Even if you have decided what you want to do with your extra room, you can consider making it a flexible space. If you design it in the right way, you can use it for multiple purposes and even create different zones that can be used at the same time. You might want to have a guest bedroom, but you don’t want it to be unused when you don’t have guests. You could use it as a home office or den when no one is staying with you.
