Depression and anxiety are chief among some of the most experienced, inhibiting illnesses today. In the United States alone, around 16 million adults experience depression, and suicide is the fourth leading cause of death, according to the World Health Organization. For decades, the answer has been prescription drugs such as Prozac. Yet, these are found to be harmful and can exacerbate symptoms if not adequately monitored or used. Additionally, some people simply don’t want to use drugs. Fortunately, some practical yet rather unconventional well-being therapies don’t require putting something into your body.

Low-Level Lasers

The application of lasers is widespread. Unfortunately, many people are under the impression that lasers are dangerous, heat-intensive and expensive. But it depends on the type. For example, the laser eye surgery cost is initially expensive but yields excellent results following cornea reshaping. Conversely, cheap infra-red lasers emit heatless light. Infra-red is a low-level laser with numerous benefits. For example, this type of laser is being used to treat anxiety and depression because it involves creating energy by stimulating the photoreceptors of mitochondria in individual cells.

Animal Support

Certain animals are well-known for their therapeutic abilities. Horses are among the most affectionate, and of course, there are cats and dogs. Additionally, hamsters, guinea pigs and bunnies are recommended because of their gentle nature. Animals such as these are widely used for helping with pressure and stress by reducing anxiety. Dogs are so good at assisting people in coping that they are also used in prisons. Interaction with dogs provides an outlet for inmates because they don’t judge, listen to your problems and show affection regardless.

Hugging and Cuddling

Speaking of affection, hugging is one of the most incredible ways of showing support for someone. Biochemically, the act of embracing another person increases the neurotransmission of serotonin. Serotonin is a natural pleasure chemical. You feel it when you eat favourite foods, have sex and accomplish something. Because hugging produces so much serotonin, it is effective at changing your mood instantly. Serotonin also counteracts the negative impact of cortisol, the chemical produced when you are depressed and anxious.

Hypnotherapy

Unlike the movies, hypnotherapy in the real world doesn’t involve a deep trance where you relive your past. With hypnotherapy as a device, you are totally aware of your surroundings and completely conscious. While a trance-like state is required, the aim is to focus your concentration on a specific event, incident or thought. Therefore, the method is effective at changing your mood and feelings in a short period. In a nutshell, hypnotherapy performed by a trained professional is more akin to guided meditation than lack of awareness, people assume.

A Walk ‘n Talk

One of the most effective things you can do for your well-being is to surround yourself with nature when possible. Taking a walk in a local park is among one of the top recommendations by professional mental health consultations. Coupled with the healing benefits of opening up and talking through your problems, the walk ‘n talk combines two prominent and recognized therapies in one. Additionally, regular walks outside boost serotonin, get you some additional exercise and help the body produce much-needed vitamin D from the sun’s UV rays.
