Now that the weather is getting a little warmer, it’s the perfect time to start working on your home. After a long winter, there are all sorts of things that need sorting out or correcting.
Check The Roof
The roof is the most exposed part of the house. During cold weather, it can take a bit of a beating. Ice, snow and icicles can all cause damage which, if left unchecked, can get worse over time.
Check your roof carefully for things like cracked slates, loose tiles and damage to the guttering. If you can see any issues, contact a builder or roofer and get them to fix them for you pronto. Don’t wait another season as the cleanup costs could be much higher in the future.
Repair All Your Woodwork
Winter is also a bad time for your home’s woodwork. Ice freezes in small cracks, opening them up and causing damage. Rot can also easily set in if left unchecked.
Go around your house and inspect all the woodwork. There should not be any gaps or cracks in the wood, or any chipped or flaking paint. If there are any cosmetic issues, deal with them immediately. If there are structural issues, ask a window installer if the window frame is salvageable. In some cases, they may be able to treat and rescue it.
Fix Your Boiler
After a long winter, many boilers are on their last legs. They’ve endured so much use that they are ready for a service.
Use the spring to schedule your annual boiler maintenance. This way, you can guarantee that it will be operational when next winter arrives.
Perform Essential Garden Maintenance Tasks
There are all sorts of garden tasks that you have to perform in the spring after a long winter. It’s critical to set up your outdoor spaces for the coming seasons.
Start by pruning your plants. You’ll need to do this early in the season and avoid damaging any fresh growth that might already be coming through. Make sure that you have the right secateurs for the job and that they are sharp enough to prevent splintering that could lead to infection.
Next, you’ll want to refresh your soil. Replace the top layer and dig it in so that any new plants you plant can get all the nutrients that they need for the coming growing season.
Spring is also the time when you need to sow any plants you want to raise from seed. When sowing, read the instructions carefully. Make sure that you leave enough distance between each seed so that they don’t crowd each other out.
Lastly, act quickly to prevent pest infestation. Hibernating creatures are at their most vulnerable stage of life at this time of year. Remove them by hand if you don’t want to use pesticides, or enlist the services of Aptive Pest Control (or another company more local to you) for professional assistance.
Repaint The Garden Fence
Lastly, consider inspecting your garden fence and then repainting it if necessary. Freezing conditions in winter can cause damage. Use wood stain treatment if you can.
