Everyone ages; some might appear to age gracefully, but we all age, every second of every day. But with age, it usually means there are some aspects in life that you don’t really realise are happening, or you at least don’t anticipate them. Like sure, there are some areas of health that people forget to take care of, and with age, they need to be taken care of a little bit more (but people don’t realize it). Honestly, you can be in your late 30s to early 40s and already start dealing with your taste buds dulling, or struggling a little bit with hearing (such as certain pitches).
You’re never really warned about it, because most people think once you’re 50, these senses are dulling. But no, they can happen much earlier. So yeah, your senses might be ageing a little faster than your actual spirit, and honestly, that’s fine. It just helps to know what’s going on so you don’t convince yourself your entire personality is slipping.
Food Stops Tasting Like it Used To
This is usually the first one, and people absolutely pretend they didn’t notice. One day, your favourite spicy dish feels a bit less spicy. Yeah, it sounds bizarre, but this is super common! But even sweet things feel a bit muted. But yeah, everything starts tasting… a bit bland. Yeah, this is absolutely normal; it’s one of the things that’s not really considered a big deal. Usually, more species are added to foods, but make sure you do it in a healthy amount, though.
Noises Start Getting a Little Weird
So this is absolutely a major one because it’s not like some revelation moment. So, hearing changes are so subtle that people miss them for years. You’re in a restaurant and suddenly you realise you can hear the plates clinking more than the person talking to you. Has this happened to you? Sometimes, it can get to the point that certain frequencies just can’t be heard anymore, either.
Honestly, even for some, in loud environments, it can be difficult to focus on one noise (like a conversation) in general. It’s all a little embarrassing, so you’ll need to save yourself some trouble ASAP, and you’ll absolutely need to look into getting a hearing test. Yes, you absolutely need to try and take care of this now because this issue will only get worse.
How About Your Eyes?
If you’re already someone who wears glasses or contacts regularly, yeah, you’re absolutely going to notice this way before someone else who doesn’t wear glasses or any sort of vision assistance. So, are you squinting more when reading? Have you noticed any differences? Usually, eyesight issues aren’t nearly as subtle as hearing loss.
Your Sense of Smell Starts Going Away
Okay, is this one the biggest shock of them all? Yeah, it could very well be; most people don’t even expect this one! Like, you walk into a room and think, “Wasn’t this candle stronger before?” Does that sound relatable at all? How about morning coffee, or freshly baked pies? Are those smells still strong? It honestly is super subtle, and again, people don’t expect this.
