6 Lessons to Learn From a Long and Cold Winter

It’s been a long and cold winter, but thankfully, spring is very much on its way. With that said, while we’ll all be looking forward to those long, warm days, there’s value in taking a moment to think about what we’ve learned from this winter and what we’ll do differently the next time the cold weather rolls around.

After all, there’s no better time to learn than when the cold and dark days are still fresh in the mind. While you can begin casting your eye towards spring and summer, the following lessons will ensure that you’re well prepared to take winter in its stride later on in the year.

A Hobby Beyond Netflix Is Key

Even though we expect it to arrive every year, the cold weather can still take us a little by surprise. Perhaps it’s because the dark nights draw in so gradually, but many of us find ourselves slipping into at-home activities that, while not bad per se, also aren’t as nourishing to our spirits as we need them to be to endure winter. It’s easy to spend months watching Netflix or scrolling through social media, and in that environment, it’s no surprise that winter isn’t our favourite time of the year.

Picking up a hobby or two is an effective way to put those long hours at home to good use. There’s no shortage of winter-friendly at-home activities to take up, including painting, drawing, writing, or wellness activities such as yoga, meditation, and breathwork.

The Kitchen Is Very Much Your Friend

The kitchen really is the star of the show during the winter months. For one thing, cooking up a great meal is simply a fun and productive way to spend your time at home. Second, it can help to keep you warm not once, but twice, or maybe even three times. You’ll be warmed up when you’re making the food, then the food will warm you from the inside when you eat, and your kitchen can also maybe provide heat to the rest of your home (for example, by leaving the oven door open while it’s cooling down).

Before next winter arrives, invest in a good cookbook. They’re a lot more enjoyable to use compared with reading from recipes online, and will stay in your family for years.

It’s Worth Investing In Extra Warm Clothing

Most of us go above and beyond to make sure that our homes are warm and toasty during the winter months. But here’s the thing: while we’re at home more in the winter than we are during other seasons, we’re not home all the time. You’ll need to be out and about sometimes — and when you are, it’s the quality of your clothing that’ll determine whether you’re miserable or content.

No one likes being cold, but it’s important to remember our temperature is within our control to a certain extent. As they say in Scandinavia, there’s no such thing as cold weather, only inappropriate clothing. There are some excellent products that can help to keep you warm on the coldest of days, including HeatHolders thermal gloves for women; round off your thermals with a quality flask that can keep tea warm all day, and you’ll have everything you need to manage the chilly temperatures with ease.

There’s an additional bonus to investing in warm clothing/products, too; it’ll make the outside world more appealing. It’s important to get outside even during the cold winter months, but most of us shy away from doing so because we don’t want to be uncomfortable. The right products remove that problem, ensuring that you’re comfortable no matter how far the temperatures fall.

Exercise Is Paramount For Keeping Winter Blues at Bay

Exercise is beneficial year-round, but we think it’s extra important during the winter months. After all, winter is a time when many of us are more likely to feel a little down and be in need of a mood boost, and that’s just what exercise provides. Plus, working up a sweat is great for boosting your immune system — also important during winter — and can help to improve your physical conditioning, which will make you beach-ready when the warm weather finally returns.

Look at taking up exercise before next winter sets in. It’s a lot easier to stay committed to working out during the winter when you’ve already felt/noticed some of the benefits of exercise throughout the spring and summer. Indeed, you’ll be even more determined to work out and get the benefits of winter exercise if you’re already in shape, since you won’t want to lose everything you’ve worked for over the previous few months.

Hosting Friends Keeps Spirits Up

There are multiple reasons why people are more likely to feel a little down during the winter months. We think the fact that it’s generally a less social time of the year plays a big role. You might see your friends and family once or twice a week when the weather is pleasant, yet go months with barely seeing them during the colder period of the year. It’s simply less appealing to visit a bar or restaurant when the weather isn’t so nice.

One way to get around this issue is to make your property a social hangout spot. Hosting dinners, putting together a home bar, or having cinema nights all provide the perfect excuse for your friends to come over, and even if that feels like a pretty basic activity, you’ll be giving yourself — and them — a much-needed boost.

Winter May Be Long, But Spring Always Arrives

We’re not going to pretend that the winter months are perfect. It can be a challenge even if you take all the tips we’ve outlined above on board. This winter seemed especially long, wet, and cold, and at some point, it felt like it was never going to end. But what we can say with confidence is that, no matter how cold and dreary winter may be, spring always comes back sooner or later.
