If you were to explore the length and breadth of England, you would be spoilt for choice. If you want to, you can head to the midlands, or you could venture up to the north, and get a proper taste for beautiful Yorkshire dales. But, if you want sweeping valleys, rolling hills, and a peaceful existence, while there’s plenty to choose from, the west of England has these things in abundance, and then some! Let’s provide you with some highlights.
Bath
While Bath isn’t particularly big, its rich and varied history says otherwise. Going to the West Country means that you’ve got to tick Bath off your bucket list. You could head to the Roman Baths, and experience the amazing structures of these preserved Roman Baths in the centre of the town. Or you could spend a day at the races at Lansdowne hill. But if you aren’t keen on horse racing, there are various other events, such as cider festivals, wedding fayres, and even half-marathons! Bath is small, but there is a lot to see. In fact, it’s best to get a hotel in Bath city centre to stay overnight so you can make the most of one of the most picturesque places in England.
St. Michael’s Mount
In Cornwall, located in Mount’s Bay, there is an island that can only be reached when the tide is low. If you’re looking for a wonderfully romantic image, this tiny island that houses a fortress, a church, and a small fishing village, will provide it. Part of Cornish folklore, St. Michael’s Mount is today maintained by the national trust, and is prime for photo opportunities. Cornwall has so many peaceful and sleepy places, that you don’t mind the slow pace of life. It’s hardly a surprise people go there to retire!
Wells
Small in stature, but quaint in style, one of the major landmarks in the Somerset countryside is Wells Cathedral. While Wells, as a place, isn’t particularly large, its picturesque buildings means that you can go to one of the most basic of shops (of which there are many) and marvel at the structure. Head to Wells Cathedral and marvel at the 12th century Gothic stylings. It is considered a cultural highlight throughout the whole of Europe.
Bristol
The cultural and spiritual hub of the West Country, Bristol is a large city that will leave you begging for more. There are so many great things to do in Bristol. If you want to experience the trade history of the city, you can go and experience Bristol via its ferry boats, experiencing what other traders were going through at sea level. On the other hand, if you’re looking for music and festivals, Bristol has them pretty much everywhere. In fact, whatever your taste, there is a festival for it. If you like your festival to be barbecue oriented, full of great music, or just celebrating the pride of the West Country, Bristol has everything between the months of May to September.
Pretty, exhilarating, but never boring. The west of England is yours for the taking!
