National Museum of American History
If you want to learn more about the heart of America at its finest, there is no better place to visit than the National Museum of American History. This building holds some unique displays from all over the USA including John Bull’s Train, Bob Dylan’s jacket, and the Star Spangled Banner. The museum mostly focuses on science, innovation, history and culture. You’ll be able to visit a climate controlled chamber which displays the Star Spangled Flag; see Thomas Edison’s lightbulb, and enjoy learning about the evolution of transport.
Library of Congress
The Library of Congress is the largest library in the world and would be heaven for Belle or Samwell Tarly. This library houses some original copies of rare books from around the world as well as early maps and documents on display. The library contains over 500 miles of bookshelves which means if you decided to visit here you would easily be able to skip the gym for a few days after. The library is well adorned with art and you’ll be able to come and enjoy some truly stunning architecture.
Newseum
Located close to the Mall, the Newseum opened in 2008 and holds some incredible exhibits. You’ll be able to see accounts and exhibits from major events in history such as the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the 9/11 attacks. It compiles archive footage, newspaper articles and other resources to make you connect with these stories and truly understand the impact they have on the world.
National Archives
For those of you who want to delve into the political history of the United States, a visit to the National Archives is an absolute must. This building houses just some of the government’s most crucial documents and records including the original Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution. You’ll even be able to find one of the original copies of the Magna Carta.
Smithsonian Castle
The Smithsonian Castle is known as such simply because of the Norman inspired architecture of the building itself. This building is a great place to start when in city tours because it offers a landmark to enjoy and is in a location where other places of interest are easy to access. The castle has a crypt which runs under the north entrance and this is where James Smithson has found his final resting place.
