Word of the Week - Excited

After writing my first Word of the Week post last Friday (which you can read here) I decided it would be good to keep going. I like reflecting on my week and it feels really good to get back into writing regularly.

I’ve gone back and forth a bit on what this week’s word should be, but recent relaxing of the lockdown rules means that I am

Excited!

I haven’t written about all the things that have changed since last year, but one of them was the breakdown of my marriage. I don’t want to dwell on that. Not only because it was a painful time and it’s obviously a very personal situation, but also because I’ve moved on. I’m happy, ex-Mr Becca is happy, the twins are happy. For the most part, it’s all very amicable and we’re pretty good at this co-parenting thing. It’s not perfect and there are definitely some issues, but we’re doing what we can to make it work.

At the beginning of this year, I met someone new! We’ll call him Muscles. Before I met him, I thought I’d be alone forever. A single mum of two, in her mid-30s, low income, mental health issues… I’m a real catch! But then Muscles came along and changed everything. Very quickly, I realised I couldn’t imagine my life without him in it.

And then lockdown happened…

Obviously, we weren’t living together and it was far too soon to consider that. We both have children to consider and it would have been madness to move in together so soon.

So the last couple of months have been survived mostly by video calling and writing lists of things we want to do when the world returns to normal. The lists are getting very long.

But now I’m super excited

because the announcement in the government briefing on Wednesday means that, from tomorrow, we can form our own little support bubble. We can finally spend time together! And with our children! Muscles has met the twins briefly – from a distance – when he very kindly brought his exercise bike round for me to use (spoiler alert – I don’t use it enough), but I will be meeting his little girl for the first time tomorrow. And soon we’ll spend time with all the kids together and I can’t wait!

I feel like the first half of 2020 has been wasted waiting around for things to get back to normal. If it ever does. I can handle social distancing and not being able to eat in restaurants or go to the cinema. I’m a pro at keeping my distance in supermarkets and following the one-way system (and glaring disapprovingly at people who don’t). But what I can’t handle so well is being kept apart from the people I care about and feeling like my life is on hold. The introduction of support bubbles for single parents and adults living alone means that my life is getting closer to normal and I’m so excited to start making memories that don’t involve waving at each other over facetime.

I know that the support bubble won’t be so exciting for everyone

It isn’t perfect. I miss my friends and the rest of my family and I know that lots of people either won’t be “eligible” to form a support bubble or will be forced to choose between their favourite households to join up with… but it’s working out very nicely for me and, after a truly awful 2019, I’m just excited that things are finally starting to go my way!

  1. I’m excited for you! What a difference this is going to make. I can’t imagine how tough it must be living alone with kids so this is going to make such a difference for you! Enjoy tomorrow, and the far better second half of 2020 with your other half 😀 #wotw

  2. I enjoyed reading your upbeat post, Becca. Good for you for meeting Muscles (love that name). I look forward to reading about your new adventures now that the lockdown rules are relaxed. The rules are relaxing here in the US too. I hope I get to travel now that restrictions are lifting!

    1. Muscles is a very fitting nickname haha! Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed my post. And I’m glad that the rules are relaxing for you too. Hopefully life will start getting back to normal x

  3. I am glad it all worked out well after your marriage breaking down and you found Muscles. hehehe
Aww! I am so glad you can join together in a support bubble. I hope you have a fab time together. I am so happy for you x

  4. I’m so glad that the social bubbles mean that you and Muscles will be able to spend time together again and I can imagine that you both must be feeling very excited over that. I’m excited over this particular relaxation of the rules too because it means that I get to spend time with my mum for the first time in over three months and I can’t wait to be able to see her again. Hope you and Muscles enjoy being able to spend time together too. #WotW
