From time to time, we all struggle to fall asleep. Whether we are dealing with toddlers who seem to hate the idea of sleep, or have too much on our minds to drift off, not getting enough sleep can have a serious effect on your mental and physical health. As a result, you must develop a healthy sleeping schedule that leaves you feeling rested and ready to go every morning.

With that in mind, here is a great nighttime routine you should follow.

In the evening:

  • Participate in some light exercise, this will leave your body feeling tired and ready for bed, and allow you to release any pent up energy.
  • Have a healthy, balanced meal that ensures your stomach won’t be rumbling into the night.
  • Refrain from caffeine if possible, as this is a stimulant that will heighten your senses, making it harder to fall asleep. You should only drink heavily caffeinated drinks in the morning.
  • Indulge in a small act of self-care that allows you to relax. Read a book, take a bath, light a candle. Do whatever you need to do to relieve any tensions you have felt throughout the day.
  • Leave work at the door. When you get home, your time is for you and your family – you can pick up any unfinished work tomorrow. Remember, you don’t get paid for working (or worrying) outside of your working hours.
  • Meditate or practice mindfulness.
  • If you have time, take a short walk.
  • Spend time with someone you love, or chat over the phone. Treat this as a way to get any worries off your chest, or just to leave a smile on your face.
  • Take a shower/bath. Wipe away any worries, and come out smelling and feeling fresh.
  • Layout your clothes and anything you need for the following day. This means you can sleep a little longer in the morning.

Before Bed:

  • Stretch. Pay attention to your body. Are your legs stiff? Does your back ache? Pay attention to these areas, especially those that feel particularly tight or tense.
  • Take any supplements you need to help you fall asleep. This can include items such as delicious cbd gummies, which are sweet-tasting and can allow you to drift off into a peaceful, undisturbed sleep in no time.
  • Brush your teeth/wash your face. If you do this at the same time every night, it signals to your body that it is time to go to sleep.
  • Follow your usual nighttime beauty routine.
  • Turn off your phone.
  • Get changed into comfortable pyjamas.
  • Spend ten minutes decluttering your bedroom, so space is welcoming and inviting.
  • If you need some background noise to help you fall asleep, turn on your favourite audiobook. Ensure you have set it on a timer so that it will turn off after an hour or so.
  • Set your alarm for the morning. Set a second alarm if you often sleep through the first. Repeat as necessary.
  • Put on a sleep mask to block out any light.
  • Get some well-needed rest!
