How To Introduce A New Partner To Your Children After A Divorce

When you begin to date again after a divorce, it’s a big step for you. It can take many years before you feel comfortable even thinking about dating again, and then to find someone who you feel you could make a life with, that’s very special.

Yet there is something that will probably be playing on your mind; your children. No matter how old they are, or how long it’s been since the divorce solicitors finished their work, when you bring a new person into their lives, it can be difficult to deal with for everyone, and even more difficult to know how to do it. Read on for some useful tips.

Have An Honest Discussion

The first thing you’ll want to do – and need to do – is have an honest and open discussion about your new partner. Your children might have understood that you were going on dates, but they could have no idea how serious you are about this one person, and it’s good to let them know once you and your new boyfriend or girlfriend are completely sure that you want to be together.

Find a time when everyone is together, ideally at a time when no one is busy doing other things, and when they are in a good mood. If they are stressed over school or have a lot of work to do or have generally had a bad day, just wait until a better time as it will make things easier.

Ensure that, when you talk about your new partner, your children know that they are not going to replace their absent parent and that they don’t need to love them right away, or at all (although liking them would be great). Listen to how your child responds and ensure their feelings are respected.

Invite Them Over For A Special Holiday

Once your children are aware that you have a new partner, they are going to need to meet them. The best way to do this is to invite your partner over on a special holiday. The children will be excited because of this special event, and the fact that your partner will be there to meet them is an added extra, it’s not the focus of the whole day. This can make things feel much less stressful and worrying for you, your boyfriend or girlfriend, and your children.

Once introductions have been made, no one will feel any pressure to keep talking to each other if there are other people around or other events happening. Of course, having a conversation would be wonderful, but these things take time and it might not happen. However, everyone will feel much more at ease if they don’t feel pressured into anything.

Keep The Lines Of Communication Open

Don’t assume that, just because your partner and your children have met that all is well and that you no longer have to try when it comes to them all. You must ensure that you keep the lines of communication open at all times, and check-in with everyone about how they are feeling. Make sure everyone knows they can tell you the truth about how they are feeling; you don’t want them to hide their thoughts from you because they don’t want you to be upset.

Once you are sure everyone is happy, organize a follow-up meeting when there is less going on so they can all get to know one another better.
